Nurture

Reducing patient dropout from therapy

EXPLORATION

Therapy is super efficient at providing relief, but surprisingly, more than 67% of patients end therapy before their 10th session.

To explore problems within mental health care service, I delved into an observational study and literature review, crafting a persona and an exploratory journey map to visualize the problem. Many problems were identified and one was selected based on its severity, urgency, impact, frequency and personal choice.
The problem identified was that when therapy doesn't match an individual's specific needs and preferences, it can be ineffective, prolonging mental illness and making the situation worse.

Nurture is a mental wellness app concept that aims to reduce bad therapy experiences by incorporating a patient-centric way of delivering treatment

OVERVIEW

RESEARCH

Why is it so hard to find the right therapist?

To understand this problem, I gathered survey responses from 87 participants and conducted in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 10 participants to gain insight into their experiences and discover ways in which the therapy experiences could be improved. Key problem include:

Patients struggle to find a therapist they were compatible with.

Incompatibility

Lack of patient feedback

Treatment feedback from patients often goes unacknowledged

Financial constraints lead to therapy discontinuation

Financial Constraints

Lack of informed consent

Lack of prior structure or treatment information leaves patients uninformed

Ideation techniques

INSIGHTS TO CONCEPTS

First, insights were translated to requirements, and prioritized using an evaluation matrix

Requirements

Next, ideas for each requirements were brainstormed, and categorized into larger themes. These were used to generate concepts. One concept was selected based on an evaluation matrix.

Organized Idea Grouping

Lastly, low-fidelity prototypes (storyboarding, use-cases, and wireframes) were tested, and a design system with mockups followed.

DESIGN

Optimizing Patient-Therapist Match

Therapist Profiles

FEATURES

Patient-Therapist match

For the most optimized match, a questionnaire is designed to gather patient details, specialization preferences, and personality criteria. Using an algorithm, matches are generated aligning with patients' requirements. Patients can then choose a therapist from the suggested options by viewing therapist profiles.

Free Mental Health Resources

Group Therapy Classes

Therapy alternatives to ensure mental wellbeing

Even if individuals lack the financial means to sustain therapy, Nurture offers free alternatives such as personalized therapy worksheets created by our onboard therapists. Additionally, we promote healthy habits like sun exposure, meditation, and more to support and maintain mental well-being. In-person group therapy classes, including options like animal-assisted and art therapy, are also provided.

Learnings

  1. Through this project, I was better able to understand the complexity of mental health issues.

  2. I had the opportunity to practice various research methodologies and implement data-driven design decision-making processes.

  3. I got the opportunity to utilizing new design frameworks, which broadened my understanding of effective problem-solving techniques.

Getting Patient Feedback

Tracking Mood + Sharing it with your therapist

Patients have the option to easily provide feedback and initiate therapist switches as needed. Additionally, they can update their therapists weekly on their feelings by sharing notes, enabling focused discussions on specific emotions during the upcoming sessions.
